Who we are and what we do
Octopus Publishing Group, part of Hachette UK is looking for a Contracts Manager, based in Blackfriars. Octopus is an award-winning non-fiction publisher with an established programme of illustrated reference including food and wine, health and wellbeing and is expanding into narrative non-fiction with the creation of two new imprints
The role is part of the wider Group Contracts Department which works across all trade divisions of Hachette UK.
Behind every publication is one or more contracts with authors, illustrators, translators, film companies, toy companies and other businesses. The Octopus contracts team, part of the wider HUK Contracts Department, is responsible for drafting, checking and negotiating the contracts for Octopus. We are involved with the book acquisition process, supporting editors when they make their offers to authors, illustrators, rights holders or agents. We ensure books are acquired on sound contractual terms, that we maintain best practice and protect the commercial interests of Octopus to enable them to publish to the widest audience. The Octopus contracts team comprises of three people, while the wider Contracts Department comprises of twenty people and handles approximately 3000 contractual paperwork requests a year.
What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Octopus and L,B Contracts Director, you will work closely with the publishing teams across Octopus, to
- ensure contracts are drafted and negotiated to high standards working within company policy and KPIs
- advise editorial and publishing teams on contractual elements of acquisitions
- draft contracts on established templates and advise on negotiations
- review incoming contracts from third parties and advise on negotiations
- draft, check and amend other contractual paperwork, including addenda, novations, reversions and cancellations
- handle internal and external contract queries
- assist in training and developing Contracts Assistant
- liaise with the other contracts teams within Hachette UK
Who we’re looking for
The ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, and a proven track record as an effective negotiator. The role will require excellent IT and organisational skills, with meticulous attention to detail. You will have a good commercial sense and understand the financial drivers in the business. You will have a good understanding of current publishing, contractual and copyright issues and will have proven experience at contracts manager or equivalent level, working with publishing or other media or licensing contracts. You may have a background in law or be working towards legal qualification, but this is not essential.

Salary: £32,500-£42,500 depending on skills and experience
